Mon Laferte flashed the red carpet at last night’s Latin Grammy Awards with a political statement regarding the police brutality in Chile.

Last night, on the red carpet of the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards, singer-songwriter Mon Laferte bared her breasts in protest of the current political unrest in Chile. Laferte’s message, which was written in black ink across her chest, read, “En Chile torturan violan y matan,” which translates to, “In Chile they torture, rape and kill.” Laferte later posted a photo of the message on her Instagram, stating, “Mi cuerpo libre para una patria libre,” (“My free body for a free homeland”).

Over the last month, Chileans have been protesting the government’s announcement to raise subway fares, and the demonstrations for economic equality and the resignation of Chilean President Sebastián Piñera have recently turned violent—over 20 people have died and hundreds injured at the hands of the police, and thousands have been detained.

Laferte, an award-winning Chilean-born Mexican dual citizen singer-songwriter who won Best Alternative Music Album for her 2018 release, Norma, at last night’s Latin Grammy Awards, has been persistently vocal about the political unrest in her homeland. On her Instagram, Laferte has posted messages and performances of her dissent, including a cover of Violeta Parra’s “La Carta” with the message, “Presidente por favor, escuche a la gente, se lo pido por nuestras familias, ya hay mucha sangre derramada,” (“President, please listen to the people, I ask it for our families, there is already a lot of blood spilled”).
