Gender is Over! (If You Want It) and Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! are coming together to give away five copies of Grace’s new memoir, Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout (written with Noisey’s Dan Ozzi) to benefit the Madison-based non-profit LGBT Books for Prisoners.

From GIO!’s Marie McGwier:

“I had the privilege of reading Laura’s memoir a few months back, and although the stories she tells resonate with me as a person who has been on a journey of self-discovery, the theme I found myself really focusing on was the idea of journaling as a vital form of self-expression when you feel isolated, lost, or separated from what’s familiar. From my perspective, she experienced a lot of trying situations while being both physically and emotionally isolated.

That got me thinking about incarcerated LGBTQ folks. Prison is a place where humans are continuously isolated and segregated from their known surroundings, and I imagine that being on the journey of understanding or coming into one’s identity while separated from everything familiar would be… incredibly challenging.

I knew I wanted to hone in on an organization that works to both educate and help LGBTQ prisoners feel less alone. What drew me to LGBT Books to Prisoners is their grassroots approach (they’re fully funded by donations and are totally volunteer-run), and their enduring dedication to incarcerated LGBTQ folks. With the knowledge that 21% of transgender women have spent time in jail or prison compared to only 5% of the adult American population (the vast majority of these women do not have access to trans-affirming books), the decision was easy.”

People can enter the contest by making a contribution (they are asking for $15, but any amount will be accepted) or donating a book to GIO. Full details are available here. The contest runs through the end of the day on November 18, so act quickly!
